Hoover SteamVac F5914-900 Steam Cleaner Review

The Hoover SteamVac F5914-900 retails for less than $200. With such a low price tag, you may find yourself wondering if this particular steam cleaner model holds its own against more expensive machines. To answer this concern, let's first start by looking at its features.

Two Separate Water Tanks

The machine has two separate water tanks. The top tank holds the clean hot water and detergent. The bottom tank holds the dirty water that is suctioned from the carpet. Although the two tank system is nice, it should be noted that there is no separate container for the detergent. It is mixed directly in the clean water tank. This means that you will not be able to rinse "as you go". Instead, when rinsing is desired, you will need to empty out the clean tank and refill it with water only. Likewise, you will need to repeat this process when you are ready to resume cleaning with detergent.

SpinScrub Brushes

This steam cleaner also has five rotating SpinScrub brushes which work to remove dirt from carpet. The speed of the brushes is adjustable. Their speed can be adjusted from low to high, as well as turned off when not needed.

Clean Surge

The Clean Surge feature is popular on many of the Hoover Steam Vac models, and it is also included with the F5914-900. This button is useful for treating particularly soiled areas. When pressed, it dispenses extra cleaning solution in these spots, so that fewer passes with the machine are needed to clean problematic areas.

The Hoover F5914-900 also includes a hose with attachment, so that it can be used on stairs and upholstered surfaces. The machine can also be used on certain hard flooring surfaces, by using the optional bare floor cleaning tool. However, it cannot be used on wood flooring.

The 12 amp motor is sufficient for both cleaning carpets and suctioning the water from them. The cleaner also features a beltless design, which makes it easier to maintain.

There are some ways in which it can be improved. For one, its name is misleading. Although it is called a "steamvac", it does not produce steam, nor does it heat the water in the clean water tank.

Also, as discussed earlier, there is no separate container for the detergent. It is mixed directly in the tank with the warm water. If rinsing is desired, users will need to empty the tank and add clean water only, an extra step that adds time on to the carpet cleaning process.

Despite these negative points, the Hoover SteamVac F5914-900 is a solid investment for the price.

Types And Uses Of Steam Cleaners

Machines used for cleaning surfaces with hot water are called steam cleaners. Steam cleaners are used to kill allergens, bacteria, mold, and fungus on surfaces. Steam cleaners are mostly used in homes, inns and restaurants, etc. Home steam cleaners are used to clean surfaces such as in the bathroom, or the carpet and so on. A steam cleaner can be used to clean any surface which is heat resistant.
There are two types of steam cleaners; traditional steam cleaners, and vapor steam cleaners. The traditional steam cleaners include a boiler, container, hose and brushes, and use warm water to make the surface clean. They are used to clean floors only. The warm water is spread on the dirty surface, and then the revolving brushes scrub the surface and collect the dirty water into a container. Some cleaners need cleaning agents to remove stains, but mostly rely on steam and brushes to perform this process.
Vapor steam cleaners include a container with a heater, a hose and a nozzle. Water is boiled in the tank to produce dry steam. This dry steam is thrown onto the dirty surface via a hose and nozzle. The steam helps in loosening the dirt and stains on the surface. The surface is then cleaned with the help of a vacuum cleaner.
Moisture content is only 6% in the vapor steam cleaner, so the surface will dry as soon as it is cleaned. Any heat resistant surface can be washed by a vapor steam cleaner. It is generally used by people who are allergic to chemicals.
Then there are steam cleaners made specifically to clean carpets. Instead of using steam, they use hot water to clean the carpet. After wetting the carpet, brushes in the steamer scrub it, and unclean water is sucked back into the container. The use of an air conditioner at the same time is good, as it eliminates humidity from the air, and the carpet gets dried quickly. Once the carpet is dry, make sure that it is then vacuumed so it is cleaned properly.
Steam cleaners can have an inbuilt water container or they can have a constant water supply. The latter is more convenient, as you will not need to fill the tank again and again.
You can get various models of steam cleaners. Before purchasing, you should look for boiler capacity, its attachments, warranty and user manual etc. It is also important that you go through all the manufacture instructions before using your stream cleaner.
